Updated Resume/CV Help

See more General / Techniques

With the loss of both my bartending/bar management jobs due to the pandemic, I just wrote my first resume (curriculum vitae or CV for my international and academic friends) in nearly fifteen years. To say I was a little rusty at putting together a resume would be putting it mildly. I haven’t had a need for a new resume in a long time – I was at my last job for twelve years, and before that I was fairly well-known in a small town, so I didn’t really need one.

I know a lot of people were helped by getting to peek at my resume back in the early 2000s, so much so that I was inspired to write a step-by step post on how to write a resume for bartenders. It has since been visited by well over a hundred thousand people, which brings me great joy to be of service.

So I figured while I was at it, I should extend some help again and not only provide you with a PDF of my 2021 resume/curriculum vitae that you can use, I also decided to go back and refresh that old blog post on how to write a bartending resume with some more modern advice. There, you can grab a Google Docs template to make life a little easier (see the bottom of that post for the template)

Link to my most current resume in PDF format is here. Hope to see you all soon for a drink.

(By the way, this layout was loosely based on a template from one of those free sites, and I’ve lost the link. But big thanks to the person who shared their original work with all of us.)

The recommendation to not use red due to its association with warnings is silly.

Should a bartender not serve a Negroni because red liquid is associated with blood? (Suze can look like pee in certain lighting, though).

Thank you for continuing to put out informative advice for this industry. I just lent T. Bar Book to my chef bf and he very much appreciated the straightforwardness and calculated approach.

Hi Jeffrey, nice layout. One suggestion. Unless there is a reason to use red, which is usually used as a warning, I’d recommend using a different color for your headings.

    • Hey, thanks but that’s not even remotely true. Red might be a color used in stop signs but outside of signage backgrounds it doesn’t signify warning or danger. See the logos for Target, Coca-Cola, Levi’s, and a million other examples.

Every time I have a new hire, I buy them a copy of The Bar Book. It’s saved me countless hours overall. While this is a major change, your impact is substantially bigger. Eager to see what’s next man.

With appreciation, thank you—for all of it and everything.

Today’s cocktail outlook would absolutely not be quite the fabulous landscape it is without the inspired generosity of your sharing. A wise Chef once told me “Knowledge is for sharing.” You certainly walk that talk & the world of cocktails is forever indebted. I’m so sorry about the closures & the necessity for this change. I’m sure that Karma will work deserved magic & your new direction will open up opportunities of prosperity & purpose that you will enjoy every minute of. I know if I could ever help you, I wouldn’t hesitate.

I just moved to central Oregon and I feel like they need you out here. Technically I need you out here, but if grouping in 100k more people helps, I’ll use it. 😄😄

    Jeffrey,

I’ve been a big fan of yours for years and have fond memories of the day I finally got to sit across the bar from you at Clyde Common for the first time in July, 2014 (was visiting from SF). Your blog, books and recipes have been a long-time go-to that I’ve constantly shared with others. You have made an incredible impact on the bar industry along with as at-home cocktail/spirits enthusiasts like me. I am excited to see what’s up next for you and hope to sit across the bar from you (or on the same side!) again very soon. Best of luck in your continued endeavors. We’re all rooting for you!

End of an era with Clyde Common and Pepe Le Moko gone. I made several of your cocktails in the last year at home, while thinking about and missing the old days at Clyde (and being out in public in general). I love how you educate those at home with their cocktail game, help others in the industry, and the obvious love and pleasure you get from your work. I hope you stay in Portland.
